Samsung Epic 4G reviewed [the competition]

Since Sprint is currently the largest portion (if not the majority) of the webOS user base, we tend to pay attention when fancy new phones launch on Sprint. We lost a lot of Pre owners to the HTC Evo 4G, but there are many out there who simply must have a keyboard. Enter the Samsung Epic 4G, part of their cross-carrier Galaxy S platform (unlike the others in the series this one carries along WiMax and a keyboard).

Is another large-screened Android phone something that webOS users should be worried about? That’s hard to say, as the Evo with its HTC Sense overlay and the Epic’s Samsung TouchWiz UI are completely different beasts. We have to admit, though, at this point much of those that have remained with Palm to this point are the contract frugal and the webOS loyal. Whether that’s going to be enough to tide them/us over until Palm releases its first device under the auspices of HP remains to be seen. continue reading »»»

Sprint launches 4G service in Boston, Daytona Beach, Fla., and Providence, R.I.

Sprint and Clearwire this morning officially popped the cork on 4G service in a trio of cities -- Boston, Daytona Beach, Fla., and Providence, R.I. We'd been seeing reports of sporadic service for a few weeks, but now there's there, it's official, and it brings Wimax data to the Evo 4G and Epic 4G Android smartphones. [Sprint]

HTC Evo 4G back in stock at Sprint

The HTC Evo 4G is back in stock at Sprint (finally), so order yours while supplies last. The phone had been on backorder for a while now. 

The first 4G phone in the U.S. has been a huge success, and Sprint and HTC hope to see its popularity grow as more of the devices creep back into stock. If you've been waiting for the Evo 4G to get back in stock, hurry up, as Sprint has said it's only a limited quantity for a short time. (What else would it say, though?) [Sprint's Twitter]

Cyanogen Mod 6 -- the one with Froyo -- hits target list of devices, first stable release

If 6.0.0 RC1 just wasn't cutting it for ya, CyanogenMod-6.0 has released what's being touted as the "first stable release based on Android 2.2" and has hit the target number of supported devices, which by our quick count includes EVO 4G, Slide, Nexus One, Dream / Magic, Aria, and Droid -- and we might be missing a few.. You know the drill; if you need a bit of Froyo in your mobile life.

Froyo update for the Evo 4G is now rootable

The Froyo (Android 2.2) update for the Evo 4G has been rooted.  While the current method is a bit hairy and involves timing and a bit of luck, the directions look very straightforward, and more important, not too dangerous to your precious hardware.  The method is a mix of the recent exploit used on the Droid 2 and tools from the UnrEVOked team, and should leave you with a fully rooted and bootloader unlocked Evo, ready for your choice of a custom ROM.   continue reading »»»
