For You Digital MX10 5-inch Android MID hands-on

Who says the Streak is the only game in town if you want a 5-inch Android device? Well, no one, actually -- there are lots of generic options if you just want something with a 5-inch display running on Google juice -- but regardless, we had a chance to check out just such a device introduced at IFA this week, the so-called MX10 with Android 2.1 from South Korea's For You Digital. Our first impression on seeing the MX10 is that it's pretty stylish and doesn't give off the air of jankiness that you occasionally get with these off-brand MIDs; it's available in both black and white, and we especially liked the white which gets a matte silver ring around the edge (the black is paired with chrome, which obviously suffers from more fingerprint issues). There's no internal cellular connectivity (the "E" on the screen above seems to be a bug), but the device supports USB host mode, which means you can connect a USB modem from your carrier of choice when the 802.11b / g just doesn't cut it.

Off-contract Dell Streak is still SIM-locked to AT&T, wrongs still being done in the world

Bummer. If you were planning to get your Streak pre-order in today, but were going to opt for the $549 off-contract version rather than the $249 on-contract version, we're sad to inform you that it's the exact same device in both scenarios.

Dell Streak presale starts this Thursday: $299 on-contract, $549 off contract

Finally, we have proper launch info for the Dell Streak. The one-day presale begins Thursday, and the 5-inch Android tablet will be in general availability on Friday. Pricing remains the same at $299 with a two-year contract on AT&T, and $549 sans contract. Otherwise, everything else is as we expect -- 5MP camera, 2GB of on-board storage, 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth, and the ability to look at the Droid X and Evo 4G like they're small fries. AT&T blocking beta tester Dell Streaks?

There's no official word from AT&T (yet), but it certainly appears that it is blocking the IMEI numbers of all the Dell Streaks handed out to testers in the US.  All data is blocked, and any calls are being routed back to AT&T customer service.  Some members at MoDaCo's forums claim that Dell has told them that this is all AT&T's doing, but as usual the carrier is keeping tight-lipped about the whole situation.  My gut call -- AT&T has a special plan in store for these mini-tablet phones and has disabled all existing units in preparation for launch. continue reading »»»

Enso whips up two smartphones and three new slates, but we wouldn't order any of 'em

Oh, Enso -- must you really give us a reason to hope? After dealing with what felt like a case of the vaporwares, and then being epically disappointed with the zenPad (which is now out of stock, curiously) that you finally shipped, we just can't muster up the courage to look fondly upon the five new products that are gracing your webstore. That said, those that don't mind risk taking and actually enjoy the thought of fighting for a refund have three new MIDs / slates to ponder along with a pair of Android-based smartphones to consider.
